all-in-one is a liability

also: burritos, product focus, and an IKEA human centipede

Hey,

You know how products can add a new feature from an adjacent use case and decide to make it their entire personality?

"We're an all-in-one platform!"

Great! So instead of one, you're competing with multiple tools in my stack.

That "all-in-one" you slapped on isn't a perk, it's a liability most of the time.

I only know a few things that are better than the sum of their parts, and they all start with the letter B:

  • Basecamp

  • Burritos

  • beehiiv (what I’m using to send this to you)

The more things you frame as the benefits of your product, the higher the chance of you hearing "we have a tool for that already" in response.

Plus, unless your product team is full of gods incarnate, every additional tool you roll into your product dissolves their focus, limits their ability to stay on top of things, and makes it more likely for the power users to churn away to a more focused product.

Don't make it harder for yourself.
